What Causes Facial Grimacing In A Person With Autism While On Tegretol?

My 25 year old son with autism clenches his fist and has facial grimacing. This is on the increase I would say more in the past few years. The pas year and half he has also had seizures.. About 2-3 times a year since summer of 2014. He is now on Tegretol. Will this facial grimacing continue? Is it connected to the seizure or anxiety? YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, it's sad to know what your son had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it could be ticks, which are due to psychiatric issues or these may be focal fits which are part of neurological disorders.

Both need to be differentiated before deciding an appropriate treatment plan. He may be needed to be reviewed by a neurologist and EEG may be needed too.

Tegral may not be sufficient and after drug levels, if these are proven to be fits, it will need either dose adjustment or add on therapy with other anti-epileptic medications. Wishing him a speedy recovery form the current issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
