What Causes Extreme Nausea And Vomiting While On Metformin?

Hi, I m 34 years old and my husband is 31. I have 2 daughters (age 13 and 4) from a previous relationship (my husband has no children...yet!) and we re now trying for baby number three. I have always had extremely irregular periods and found out about 6 years ago that i suffer from PCOS after trying for over 2 years to become pregnant with my 2nd child. I was eventually able to conceive her after being put on Metformin. My hubby and i have been TTC for over 8 months now, without any success. The doctor recently (1st Feb 2016) put me back on Metformin 500mg daily, as that worked for me last time, however this time around I ve been getting some strange side-effects. I m always extremely nauseous sometimes to the point of vomiting, constantly emotional and crying, depressed, and now I ve started getting a whiteish, clear, greenish coloured discharge from both nipples. I did a test, but it was negative. What should I do? We re desperate to have a baby. Please help...Many thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Metformin can be associated with gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, indigestion.
These effects do not occur in everyone.

It is not normally associated with changes in mood so it is possible that this may be due to the stress from trying to conceive.

The discharge from the nipples may be due to infection so this should be assessed by your doctor to determine if this is the case.

I hope this helps
