What Causes Extreme Mood Swings?

Hello for atleast a year now i have been concerned about myself in general. Whenever im happy and out and about with family i kind of have these images or something in my head that shows me doing something crazy like throwing a cup of water or something like that over the people around me? I just want to keep this private cause im very young and i just fear theres something wrong with me, i just - in the present moment im in - just see myself doing a bad thing? It has been on and off but over a few months have increased. I do ask this is kept private. I dont want anyone coming up to me, or anything. I just want to do this over email and be kept anonymous - thankyou.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Such symptoms are mainly caused by stress (emotional or physical), anxiety, hurt, depression, frustration, hormonal shifts (PMS / PMDD), substance use disorders and mental health disorders. Such symptoms can also be caused by borderline personality disorder (BPD, Bipolar disorder, Cyclothymic disorder, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a psychiatrist. Get all required tests and investigations done to detect the type of disorder that is causing you distress so that it can be treated at the earliest.

You will be treated with medications, phytotherapy and lifestyle changes like regular exercise, good sleep, balanced home made diet, restriction from addictions if any like smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc. Talk therapy, group talk, cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, etc. are effective and helpful. Get treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
