What Causes Excessive Weight Gain After An Appendectomy?

I had an appendectomy 4 1/2 days ago. I pretty much ate nothing in the hospital for 2 1/2 days. When I got ready to come home I noticed my shorts I had worn were almost impossible to button. They were extremely baggy when I went to the emergency room. When I got home I had gained 16 lbs. After eating nothing and drinking maybe 10 or more bottles of bottled water, which I do daily!! What caused this weight gain? I look 6 months pregnant!! I had a scope surgery, btw. Nancy Potter YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Excessive weight gain could be due to immobilization and decreased physical activity. Also, you need to rule out medical conditions, like hypothyroidism, Cushing disease. Once they are cleared, eat food rich in fiber, protein and low in fat, do exercise regularly and drink lot of water.

I hope I have answered your question. If you have further queries I'm happy to help you.
