What Causes Excessive Thirst And Swollen Body At High Altitudes?
Why do I get swollen and constantly thirsty at high altitudes? I recently moved into a high rise and currently visit my friends who also live in high rises. I ve noticed that every time I stay that high up I start to swell. Every morning I wake up now my face looks like it s been stung by a bee, hands and feet ache from the swelling, and I m extremely thirsty. I love heights and condo lifestyle, so is there a way to cure this?
Suggestive of mountain sickness. This condition occurs due to prolonged exposure to high altitudes at about 8,000 feet or more above sea level. Physical activity soon after ascent to high altitudes leads to fluid retention resulting in swollen face and limbs. You need to consult a doctor for proper evaluation and use of medication like acetazolamide to correct the symptoms associated with mountain sickness. Meanwhile, I advise you to return to lower altitude, reduce your physical activity, and resting at least a day before moving to higher altitude.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
