Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has taken .5 klonopin for 2 nights and today we could not get him to stay awake. Is this a good medication to take? He has dementia/parkinsons and does not go into a deep sleep. That may be a problem but being stooped over, having to hold him up and he falls asleep in his chair and falls out on the floor, plus I had to feed him. Please advise.
Klonopin can cause sedation and drowsiness, and it sounds like this is what is happening with your husband. Especially in elderly patients, medications like Klonopin can be too strong and cause too much sedation.
I would suggest stopping the Klonopin and letting your doctor know. If he is taking the Klonopin for sleep hopefully your doctor can prescribe a less sedating medication for him, such as melatonin.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
General & Family Physician
