What Causes Episodes Of Vomiting And Diarrhea Post Intake Of 500 Mg Clarithromycin?

Is 500mg dose of clarithromycin strong? A relative has been prescribed this and after 3 tablets has vomited and now has diarrhea which he didn t have before. He has eaten very little since Sunday and I have read vomiting and diarrhea can be side effects of this antibiotic. Also, there has been a previous incident when the antibiotics seemed to make him worse.

Hi,

It is a bit on the high average side. both the size of the pill and that it interacts with the liver make erythromycin family more likely to cause nausea and vomiting than most other antibiotics. Diarrhea is usually due to a change in gut bacteria due to antibiotics and all of them cause it quite commonly and Pepto Bismal is usually very helpful for it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
