What Causes Enlarged Taste Buds On The Back Of The Tongue?
Hi, i am 33 and have enlarged taste buds on the back of my tounge. They are not painful. It started about 4 weeks ago all of a sudden with a feeling of hair in my throat.. i had been on antibiodics for 3 weeks prior.. i have been under a lot of stress in the past 6 weeks. I have had swabs with nothing that showed up. To start with there was a whitish coating so u gargled salt water 3 times a day for a week. The whitish coating went away but the bumps have not. I have been to.my GP and he is not that concerned, but sent me to an oral surgeon just to put my mind at ease... i also suffer from anxiety and also recently started back on medication. Anxiety leaves me with a dry mouth and so does the medication. I saw the oral surgeon yesterday that put me on Fungilin lozengers and sent me for an xray. He said they may take a sample under general anesthesia.. however i dont think there was too much concern from him...? i am really worried that its something serious... could it be? I have had soooo many blood tests to test for everything when i had some woman s problems about a month ago and bloods were fine.. if i did have a serious problem would that of shown up in bloods as abnormal? Please help i am really worried...
It looks like you have inflammation and hypertrophy of the Circumvallate Papillae and they can get inflamed due to causes like oral infections and thrush can be a cause as it can cause inflammation of tongue papillae.. Other causes can be throat infection, post nasal drip, acid reflux etc.. As you have a dry mouth, it can also cause inflammation and irritation of tongue and throat and can cause inflamed papillae.. It is not however necessary that it is something serious.. For now you can get the Biopsy done and start gargling with specialised mouthwash like Magic Mouthwash.. You can also do warm saline gargles as it will help in reducing the size of the papillae. Drink plenty of cool water and avoid spicy and acidic foods..
For reducing dry mouth chew sugar free chewing gum and use mouth lubricants like Oral Gel..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
