What Causes Enlarged Bumps On The Back Of Tongue?

Hey. I have these enlarged bumps on the back of my tongue. Not too big but they almost cover half of my tongue. I ve had this problem for about 3-4 weeks now. And my tonsils and throat also hurt. The bumps don t hurt unless I brush them but they are sometimes irritating. And today I woke up with the corners of my mouth extremely cracked and dry. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I thought I d add that. I just wanna know if it s anything extreme. I also smoke cigarettes, and I am 21 years old.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query. The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards enlarged papillae . The become enlarged when they get irritated or there is some trigger factor that disturb then physiologically .

There are certain trigger factors responsible for there enlargement like hormonal changes , stress , hot and spicy food , poor oral hygiene or acidic food .

They usually get normal without any treatment within few days .

I would suggest you to :-

- Do warm saline rinses several times a day .

- Avoid hot and spice food or acidic food .

- Maintain proper oral hygiene by brushing and flossing teeth twice a day .

- Do mouthwash rinses (listrine ) twice a day .

I condition doesn't get better in 10 days then consult oral pathologist for proper examination and to rule out other conditions like canker sores oral herpes.

Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin) or anti allergic drug like zyrtec or sucralfate

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
