What Causes Enlarged Bile Duct?

My mom was diagnosed with a enlarged bile duct. She does have gallstones - but now the doctor is concerned with why the bile duct is enlarged - says that means there is an obstruction (stone, cancer). He is recommending she see a gastroentologist and go for further testing. Can you tell me what the casues of an enlarge bile duct are? Her blood work was completely normal bw.

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

Enlarged bile duct is most commonly caused due to obstruction by gall stones. As your mother has history of gall stones, this factors is most probable cause of Enlarged bile duct. Other uncommon cause of enlarged bile duct are chronic pancreatitis(infection of pancreas) & tumours.
Now she would be advised a CT scan or MRI scan, if not done before. Cholecystectomy or removal of gall bladder might be needed. If the common bile duct is obstructed, placement of stent inside common bile duct may be needed too.

Refer to your gastroenterologist
Hope this helps
