General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I can understand your concern. Hope you are doing good now.

Emphysema is a lung condition in which the bronchiole - the smallest branch of your windpipe and alveoli - the balloon like structure at the end of bronchiole , become dilated and lose its elasticity. It can be caused by several factors. Depending on your age, the cause will differ.

Anyway, the most common case is cigarette smoking. And the second one is genetic/ hereditary. Inhalation of toxic gases from the fire place and occupational exposure may also cause this condition.

Hope I answered your query. Consult a pulmonogist/ chest physician and he/she will guide and decide your treatment.

Regards,

Dr. Arveen A Sulfath
