What Causes Elevated Lipase Levels?

My lipase levels were 106 post alcoholism. Binging off and on. I'm 39 years old and an athlete otherwise very healthy but have consumed high volumes of alcohol off and on. Should I be concerned with this level. Will it most likely reduce. I have a follow-up test a week following the original test!

Hello,

First, any number has to be put into context. The distribution of normal and the numbers associated with disease matter.

Lipase falls out of a pancreas when it is injured. This is very bad. It goes away fast with healing (days). It is generally over 3 times higher than normal in problems.

Scarring of the pancreas can make it both always elevated and the pancreas always injured. Slightly elevated during drinking is on the one hand only slightly bad but on the other hand, most alcoholics do not have this, so, it shows a real potential for serious problems with any alcohol.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
