What Causes Elevated Blood Glucose Level While On Valsartan?

Hi, I am presently taking valsartan hctz 320/12.5. My glucose level is elevated. Is it possible that my hypertension medication is causing my elevated glucose level. My primary physician has prescribed Metformin. I have a problem with all the side effects of valsartan and metformin which are very similar co does that mean I ll be experiencing a double whammy of side effects?

Hi, Thanks for your question. Please rate my answer if you are satisfied.
Well in a study conducted very recently, only 3 out of 346 people taking valsartan showed raised blood glucose. That means despite it being highly unlikely for valsartan to cause your raised blood sugar it's still not impossible. Having said that, your high blood sugar might be totally unrelated to valsartan and you might be developing insulin resistance or diabetes independently (as hypertension and diabetes share many of the risk factors). Metformin is a very good initial drug for high blood sugar. If you are having side effects of these drugs you should discuss it with your physician to switch you on different classes of drugs as there are many choices available.
