What Causes Elevated SGPT Levels While Cholesterol Levels Are Normal?

i have an elevated SGPT = 94 and I am a male 68 years old. My cholesterol level is within normal range and I don t have diabetes. This reading was taken before my doctor advise me to take hypertension medicine (Olmesartan Medoximil). My doctor also advised that I undertake blood test for for HAV & HBV and the result of my test shows that my antibody for Hepatitis B is 21.03 mlU/mL, IgG Antibody for hepatitis A Virus is REACTIVE, IgM antibody for Hepatitis A Virus is nonreactive & Hepatitis B surface antigen is nonreactive. Could you please advise why I have an elevated SGPT?

Hello,

You have elevated SGPT level, it is indicative of liver dysfunction. Normal results are negative or nonreactive, meaning that no hepatitis B or A surface antigen was found. About IgG (immunoglobulin G) antibodies, if you test positive for them but not for IgM antibodies, it means you had a hepatitis A infection in the past or had vaccinations to protect against it.

Increased levels of SGPT level is caused due to acute hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, inflammation, etc. You are suggested to quit alcohol, smoking, or addiction if any. If overweight, do regular walking, reduce weight. Since you have history of being diabetic, control your blood glucose level at all cost to prevent worsening of the symptoms.

Other medical conditions that may cause increased SGPT are heart ailment, coeliac disease, drug abuse, age, inflammation of the gall bladder, derma myositis, etc. You are suggested to get a complete medical examination done, get al required tests and investigations done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
