What Causes Elevated CRP Levels And Hardening Of Arteries?

My doctor said I have elevated CRP levels and hardening of arteries. I am 44 years old, I am not overweight, I do not smoke and I eat pretty healthy. I don t work out but I am a pretty active person, with a 2 yr old daughter. Any reason I would get this.

Hi there,

An elevated CRP (C-reactive protein) is a marker for inflammation. Hardening of arteries can be caused by inflammation. An elevated CRP and hardening of arteries in an otherwise healthy person would be concerning for vasculitis, which is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks it's own blood vessels. Things to do for this - I would have your doctor check autoimmune markers such as those for lupus (ANA, p-ANCA, lupus anticoagulant). It may be a good idea to start taking a baby aspirin. I would also have your doctor check your cholesterol levels and make sure that you don't have high lipid and cholesterol levels, which can also lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries). Sometimes, this can be caused by genetics. Finally, I would start exercising regularly, as this can help your overall cardiovascular health. I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.
