Hi, my AST came back 44, ALT 96, and GGT 71. I drank heavily for many many years, but stopped two weeks ago, a few days prior to the test. Kidney and pancreas readings are normal, negative for Hepatitis. How concerned should I be? Normal BP and pulse. Age 34, 5 10 , 200 lbs

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the lab test results.

The report is suggestive of some sort of liver injury apparently caused by heavy alcohol intake over the years. It will take a couple of months for the raised liver enzymes to return to their base line values provided you must stop taking alcohol or alcohol containing various beverages.

You are overweight as reflected by your high BMI of 28.70 Kg/m2.
The range for normal BMI is 18.5-25 Kg/m2, as per your age and height the ideal weight should be less than 174 Lbs.

So, you need certain life style modifications to reduce your body weight like avoid taking fatty vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods, fast and junk foods, sweet carbonated drinks, take home cooked foods, drink plenty of healthy water, eat lots of fruits and vegetables of course do not forget about regular exercise for about one hour/day.

Hope to have answered your query.
