What Causes Early Menstruation With Short Periods?

We've been trying to fall pregnant for the last couple of months. This month my period came about 5 days early and lasted only 2 days (usually lasts about 7), but it was rather heavy for these days, then just stopped! I took a pregnancy test just in case, which came back negative. Is there any reason that my period would be so short? Is this normal?
