What Causes Ear Discharge And Muffled Hearing?

Hello, about two weeks ago my right ear started to "leak" with a odorous dishcharge. It has manifested into muffled hearing and when I blow my nose, it sounds like a futtering sound, almost like it will clear but it does not. The discharged has gone away and now I am waiting to get my full hearing back. The best I can describe is that it is almost like having a clogged ear after swimming, but I dont believe that I have earwax buildup. Any ideas on what I may have are appreciated.....

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain clogging and congestion in ear post ear discharge and muffled hearing can be due to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum and blocked Eustachian tube.
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation
and investigations like otoscopy can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics, oral as well as nasal decongestants like Xylometazoline nasal sprays.
Along with it steam inhalation and chewing chewing gum can help..
In case of no improvement in 15 days surgical drainage by making a small incision through the eardrum
can help..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Honey Arora
