What Causes Dryness Around The Mouth?

I have some dryness around my mouth. It does not itch but it does have some redness to it. I have put large amounts of moisturizer on it at night and in the morning, but it is still there. One side was cracked, but then I put Neosporin on it and that went away. I stopped at the local drug store and talked to the pharmacy, he could not really tell me anything . DO you have any suggestions? I have had a lot of stress lately, could it be hives?

Thanks for the query..

Dryness and redness around the mouth along with cracking at the corner can be due to Perioral Dermatitis that is an allergic reaction..
There can be a number of facts like bacterial infection, using nasal and topical steroids, chemical cosmetics, fluoride toothpastes, poor facial hygiene, hormonal imbalances etc..
Consult an Emergency room or a Skin Physician and get a clinical examination done..
You can be advise you to apply topically ointments containing Doxycycline, Eythromycin, Metronidazole..
You can also be advised oral intake of erythromycin..
Ointments containing Azaelic acid,Pimecrolimus etc can help..
Avoid any skin cosmetic or steroid ointments..
Avoid excess sun exposure, use gel based sunscreen lotion..
