What Causes Dizziness While Doing Yoga?

I was taking a yoga class, got extremely dizzy, sweating, and couldn't get up. was diagnosed with inner ear problem and given meclizine for dizziness. Was heart rate was 50, I am a 70 year old woman in good shape and just had my annual checkup with no red flags. Should I be concerned about the heart rate?

A heart rate of 50 is too low and you could conceivably pass out and fall at that heart rate, and you do not want that. Now, because you got dizzy, started sweating while doing yoga, it is possible you suffer from "orthostatic hypotension" a condition that occurs when changing positions and the blood pressure drops too quickly. This can be caused by medication, by a low fluid intake, an electrolyte imbalance or an ongoing inner ear problem.

You may try to focus on getting 64 ounces of fluid daily, eating a small meal before exercising and if you continue to have symptoms of this nature, please seek counsel from your doctor to recheck inner ear condition, titrate medication if you are still on it, and/or check your electrolyte status.

For informational purposes, a resting heart rate of 60 is considered a general cut-off for "normal". And, it is not normal to drop your heart rate or blood pressure when you go from a sitting to standing position, that is what we term, as I mentioned earlier, orthostatic hypotension. Your doctor can check your blood pressure and heart rate while you are laying down and then again when you stand up.

Take care not to fall and when you do yoga, sit where there is a grab bar if you can. Hydrate. Eat lightly. Take fall precautions.
