What Causes Dizziness Followed By Vomiting?

I am a nurse. One of my patients has had dizzy spells 3 times since Oct 9th. The last episode was followed by vomiting. He was admitted to hosp for aspiration pneumonia. In reviewing his chart, prior to each episode of dizziness he smoke (hotboxed) a strong cigarette. After dizzy, low BP (85/48) and nausea. He is a long time smoker. Thoughts?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello,

Since his blood pressure is very low (hypotension), this is likely cause for dizziness and vomiting.

And the reason for low blood pressure is aspiration pneumonia (lung infection). Pneumonia is often considered as systemic infection which can cause sepsis (bloodstream infection).

And sepsis releases inflammatory mediators which causes hypotension. Hypotension causes the reduced blood supply to the brain and stomach which ultimately lead to dizziness and vomiting.

So first treat pneumonia aggressively and Intravenous fluids and inotropic support for hypotension. Don't worry, he will be alright.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
