What Causes Discomfort In Throat, Burping And Difficulty In Bowel Movement After A Surgery?

I just had abdominal hernia surgery on Wednesday. After much pain and discomfort due to constipation brought in by Endocet, I returned for an enema and got some relief. I am still experiencing an extraordinary amount of burping and the feeling that something is rotating / moving around in my throat. I am afraid to drink too much, because my bowel movement isn t regular yet and my follow up isn t until Thursday. This is the most annoying sensation and predicament. What is likely causing the issue with my throat, the burping and the slow return to normal bowel movement?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of open hernia surgery on Wednesday, developed pain and discomfort due to constipation brought about by Percocet, got the enema done and helped a bit. But there is extraordinary burping and and feeling that something is rotating/moving around throat, afraid to drink much due to fear of slow bowel movement and not regular yet.
Constipation is a well known side effect of Percocet and will wear off soon. Do not repeat Percocet at any cost.
The burping must have taken stomach acid with it to the throat hence the throat problem as you have mentioned.
I would advise you the following:
X-ray of the abdomen in standing position to see for fecoliths and repeat enema if needed
Simultaneous oral laxative like Cremaffin plus in moderate dosages if there are no intestinal obstruction symptoms.
PPI like Omeprazole.
Antacid.
And rest of the treatment as per the findings of the reports and clinical evaluation by a General Surgeon.
I find this answer helpful
