Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Discomfort In The Chest After Having Food?
I get discomfort in my chest sometime after food and or drink. It can happen any time shortly after or hours later upon exertion. It is like a heavy ache. It usually disappears after I stop for a brief time. I have been diagnosed as having a hiatal hernia and also a few gallstones. I have been told that the hernia can cause chest pain. I have NO pain in the stomach or gallbladder area. Just the chest discomfort. It has beeen suggested that I have my gallbladder removed but no guarantee that that would stop my chest pain. Do you have any suggestions how I can eliminate this discomfort?
Dear patient, The heavy ache comes mainly from the hiatal hernia. Your stomach gets fulls and is propelled toward the chest. There, the stomach starts to push other organs and give the feeling of heavy ache. Please, start eating slowly and in smaller amounts more often during yhe day. It's better to have five small meals during the day, than three big meals. You also have to lose some weight and to avoid tight clothes and tight belts. They put more pressure on the abdomen, pushing the stomach upwards through the hernia. I hope I have helped you. Best wished, Manoku Eni M.D.
