What Causes Discharge With Sweet Smell During Pregnancy?

Hello, I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and have noticed for the past day or so that whenever I use the restroom I smell a very sweet smell and have been warned by friends and family with kids that it could be amniotic fluid leaking. I m not sure if this is true or not and would like advice before I call the doctor. I have already had to have the L&D at the hospital stop labor with my pregnancy once already.

Hello,
It is true that amniotic fluid has this smell and the possibility of a slow leak cannot be ignored. Another fact that should be noticed is that intake of pulpy fruits and certain foods also can cause this smell. To rule out leakage of amniotic fluid, you should take the nitrazine paper test, which changes color on exposure to amniotic fluid. The paper should be allowed to get wet with the vaginal discharge for this test. If slow leak is detected, strict genital hygiene is to be maintained, foot end should be elevated and if delivery is needed to be done, the fetus is mature enough and hence, there is no need to worry. Hope this helps.
