What Causes Difficulty In Urinating?

I am taking longer to urinate than usual. When I had I yearly checkup I told my doctor and she said when you get older it can take longer to urinate. I feel like I need to go and if I sit there long enough I will go but a little at a time. Is this normal for my age?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
I understand your concern
Longer urination time could be due to prostate enlargement.
In older age prostate enlargement is common and it compress the urethra cause longer time for urination.
In older age, muscle of bladder also become weak.
Risk factors are: Over weight, diabetes melitus, neurological disorder.
I would suggest to go for serum PSA level, rectal examination, urine analysis, blood sugar,cystoscopy/cystogarm and USG pelvis if needed to confirm prostate enlargement.

Following are the treatments will help you
1. Bladder training
2. Double voiding
3. Scheduled toilet every 3-4 hours
4. Reduce fluid intake and take more solid fluid
5. Avoid alcohol and caffeine
6. Pelvic floor exercise.

Drugs: Anticholinergic group like Oxybutynin, Alfa bloker group like Tamsulosin
Hope this may help you.

Best regards
Dr. sagar
