What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing?

I went to urgent care today thinking I had strep throat, due to a sore throat for about 3 weeks. The physicians assistant did a throat culture which was negative.I explained I was having difficulty swallowing and it felt like I had a lump in my throat. She seems to think I am having a problem with my thyroid and advised me to make an apt with my dr. for a thyroid test... why?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

The difficulty in swallowing commonly can be because of thyroid problem or posterior pharynx infection. Mass in pharynx, enlarged tonsils, pharymgeal web, achalasia etc are another causes. Your USG thyroid scan and posterior pharynx examination should be done for primary work up. If needed than endoscopy or Barium swallow x ray can be done. I suggest you to consult physician for examination.

Hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
