What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing After A Stroke?

My husband had a stroke on Sept. 30 and has had trouble swallowing liquids and needs them thickened. Now he is on levofloxacin 250mg for a UTI for which he was hospitalized for 2 days. Today is day 5 of 7 days of the medication. He also had it in thru an IV in the hospital. Today he has been having trouble swallowing even solid foods that he had no difficulty with before. Is this caused by the medication and how concerned should I be. He sees his doctor Tuesday.

hi mam, difficulty in swallowing liquids is not uncommon in stroke.difficulty in swallowing solids occurs with some obstruction or irritation due to infections like moniliasis causing pain to swallow, any tumours obstructing in esophagus etc.levofloxacin per se doesnt cause any difficulty in swallowing.only with thorough examination and essential investigations,we can arrive at a specific diagnosis.possibility of recurrence of stroke should also be looked for.you need not panic as any of the above conditions are not life threatening.if you have any other queries,i'm ready to answer with pleasure.kindly keep up your courage and also boost up your husband's morale.thank you.take care.bye.
