Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In old age or in geriatric patient, constipation is main complaint noted and it is happening due to the diet, and hypovitaminosis.

Apart from this, the condition needs to be ruled out for other intestinal pathologies, before trying some laxative and stool softener.

In old age, great care needs to be taken while giving laxative, purgative or stool softener.

I would advise to put him on fibber containing diet, lot of liquid diet, and even give him ore drinking water. He may need different test to rule out the intestinal pathologies.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain
