Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Difficulty In Bowel Movement And Blood While Urinating After Hip Surgery?
Hubby had hip revision surgery 4 days ago and is taking Percocet and not moving around as much as usual. He strained very hard to have a bowel movement this morning and then had bright red blood from the penis. Next time he urinated he passed a tiny clot. Then nothing for hours, but just had bleeding with urination again. No pain, no burning. Last night he was in the ER with a fever. All labs including urinalysis were normal. He was dehydrated.
Blood in urine post hip replacement surgery is a rare complication though harmless and completely curable with symptomatic treatment. It is due to the intrapelvic intrusion of cement used in hip replacement. Another possibility is due to long-term or >4days foley catheterization of the urethra.
Kindly report your symptoms to the surgeon who operated such that he can do a clinical examination and if required some investigations like x-ray kidney, ureters, and bladder.
You need not worry as it is not a dangerous condition and is treatable. So, please do notify the concerned surgeon as early as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi.m,
Anesthesiologist
