What Causes Difficulty Breathing While Having Hypertension?

I am 76 years old and in good health save for some mild hypertension. I am physically active (golf 3 times a week). Lately I have experienced moments when I have some trouble getting a full breath of air...not quite gasping but I have to make a conscious effort to draw in a full breath. I am a moderate consumer of alchohol and smoke an average of one cigar a day.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello,
thank you for your query.
there are different causes of breathlesness but which are relevant to you are:
heart causes:heart failure,pulmonary edema
lung causes:COPD,interstitial lung disease,pneumonia
i shall advise you to
quit smoking
check BP,XRAY chest,ECHO,LUNG function.
also consult a cardiologist because thorough history and clinical examination is needed to reach provisional diagnosis.
hope this is helpful.
regards.
