What Causes Difficulty Breathing Due To Choking Caused After Eating?

Hello. I have a problem with my throat. It feels like something s stuck in it. It started up Saturday afternoon, and it s now Tuesday night. At first I just thought a piece of food somehow got stuck to the walls of the esophagus, and since I had no difficulty breathing, I let it go. But with each passing day I got a little more worried. I tried drinking water, eating soft things, gargling with salt water, drinking warm tea, and even induced vomiting. Nothing worked. In fact, all that happened is that I noticed the discomfort gets worse when I drink something warm, or drink something like vinegar or honey, which both kill bacteria. I talked it over with my parents finally, and they suggest that nothing is stuck in my throat, but instead that I somehow hurt my throat with something too hot or too hard. Is that possible? Do you know what I might have done and what I can do now? It s driving me crazy.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms are typical of severe acid reflux and gastritis. As a first line management you can take over the counter available antacids like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole for symptomatic relief.

Avoid spicy foods. If you are obese, losing extra weight be beneficial.

If symptoms persist better to consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated. In severe cases and endoscopy may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
