Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been experiencing low haemoglobin of 103 7 weeks ago with a ferritin level of 6. My dr put me on iron and now have hgb of 91 and ferritin level of 8. Switched from ferrous fume rate to ferosol in this time as fume rate causing diarrhea. Ferosol doing the same. I had a colonoscopy 1.5 yrs ago as my cancer check was positive for OB. It was clear. I had a partial bowel obstruction 4 months ago/valvulos which cleared itself. Had a ct scan of abdomen which was clear. Would you expect I have an active bleed somewhere and what should my dr do next. I am scheduled for a UGI series this coming week and booked to see a surgeon for gastroscope in October. Should I be seeing a surgeon sooner?
You should definitely get a repeat colonoscopy done to ensure they did not miss any polyps or growths or ulcers. Additionally the Upper GI endoscopy is also important. Iron therapy has diarrhea as a common side effect. You could try Diphenoxylate to control that.
Also, if it is too uncomfortable, you could ask your clinician what he feels about you being put on parenteral iron therapy, that is essentially iron being given to you through an IV line.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
