What Causes Diarrhea, Lower Back Pain And Blood In Urine?

I have a family member who has had frequent diarrhea, lower back pain on the left side and one incident this week of blood in her urine. She is taking Gabapentin, which may be causing the diarrhea and or lower back pain. She had a stool test last month that came back negative. The family member is 87 years old. She has regular check ups and quarterly blood/lab test. Given the range of possibilities in this case should she pursue having a colonoscopy now or seek a MRI first to rule out things such as stones.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

She should consider the MRI of the abdomen and pelvis. It would show the kidneys and the other aspects of the urinary tract and may also give a small amount of information about the colon and other areas of the digestive tract.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
