Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has bipolar disorder. He has been a smoker for many years and has begun taking chantix. I am concerned because he has become extremely depressed and is having suicidal thoughts. He will not quit taking the chantix because he says it is the only way he can quit smoking. You opinion? YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is good to learn that your son is wanting to quit smoking. Chantix is not addictive and quite effective but if your son is experiencing side effects of taking Chantix, irritability, sleep disturbance, tiredness, headache, suicidal thoughts then you should immediately report to your treating doctor. The dose of Chantix needs to be monitored (lowered) or the medication needs to be substituted with other medication that will help him quit smoking. Visit ER. Give your son quality time, keep him under your observation, help him cope with the side effects, give him healthy food and keep him happy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
