What Causes Delayed Periods While On Advil?

Hi! Two-three weeks ago I got my wisdom teeth extracted. I m nursing my 16 month old so I didn t take the pain killers prescribed which led me to take 600-800mg of Advil every 3-4 hours for about a week. My period was due yesterday and there is still no sign of it. I ve taken 2 pregnancy tests that have come back negative. Could my period be late due to all the Advil I took earlier this month?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Yes, Advil (Ibuprofen) can delay menstruation, especially if taken in high doses. This happens because, Advil inhibits prostaglandin, the substance responsible for pain and uterine contraction. The uterus needs prostaglandins in order to shed the inner lining and initiate menstrual bleeding. So, yes, with the pregnancy having been excluded, you can safely assume that Advil is the cause for the delay in menstruation. There is no cause for worry and your menstruation will be back soon. All the best.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ornela Ademovi
