Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

You are protected from pregnancy all month, even while you are taking the inactive pills, while you take oral contraceptives. They work by inhibiting ovulation, so even if you are not taking the active pills, you still will not ovulate during that time.

So you do not need to worry about pregnancy if you took the pills as directed and it is most likely that you are starting your period if you have begun to spot. Sometimes your period can get very light on the pill, especially if you have been taking it for a long time, or come late in the inactive week, but keep taking your pillls as directed and start the new pack on time and everything will be fine.

I hope this advice was helpful and answers your question.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
