What Causes Delay In Periods After Removal Of Mirena Coil?

Hi, I had the Mirena coil removed in 15th January and still haven t got my period except for a little bleeding few a few hours on day 4 of having it removed. Is this normal? Can I still ovulate without a period and we want to try for another baby. How long do I need to leave it before I seek medical advice?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,
Understand your concern.
Mirena is a progesterone contain intrauterine device, long term contraceptive and reversible in action.
It make the cervical mucus thick and make uterus unfavorable for implantation.
Following are the side effect:
1. Irregular menstruation/delyed/eccessive period
2. Cramp pain
3. Dizziness and headache
4. Infection

So bleeding/spotting after removal is normal
SO mirena cause hormonal imbalance and cause delayed in period
It will take around 4-10 weeks to become normal as body get adapted.

Other cause of delyed period may be
1. High level of stress
2. Change in life style
3. Late ovulation
4. Excessive exercise
5. Drugs: Birth control pills, tyroid medication, Excessive tea and caffeine
6. Thyroid problem
7. Hormonal imbalane
8. Endometriosis: spotting

Do regular walking and exercise.
Eat healthy diet
Eat fruits like papaya, orange and pomegranate

Also note that
Menstruation required co ordinate action of various hormone that secreted by ovary (estrogen and progesterone) and brain (FSH and LH).
If any above hormone is decreased or increased there is imbalance in menstruation.
So please do full hormonal profile : Estrogen, progestron, LH, FSH, HCG and thyroid hormone if period will not come
That help to diagnose hormonal imbalance.
Also do Usg if nedded
After confirmation you can take treatment according So please go ahead.

Hope this may help you
All the best.
Stay healthy.

1.Tablet cetrizine 5 mg BD orally
2. Maintain hygiene
3. Wash vagina 4-5 times in a day with warm salted water
4. Wear pure cotton innerwear
Hope this may help you.
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
