What Causes Darkness On The Balls Of Feet?

My feet have been very wet and sore by the end of the day the last few weeks and now the skin on the balls of my feet are dark. The color is very white when I take my socks off and then become darker than normal when they dry out. Should I be concerned?

Hi,

Darkening of the skin on the balls of the feet can be caused by various factors. One common cause is excessive sweating, which can lead to a buildup of moisture and bacteria on the skin. This can result in a fungal infection known as an athlete's foot, which can cause itching, burning, and a darkening of the affected skin.

Other possible causes of darkened skin on the balls of the feet include friction from poorly fitting shoes or an overgrowth of thickened skin (calluses). In some cases, certain medications or medical conditions such as diabetes can also cause changes in skin color.

If you are experiencing discomfort, itching, or other symptoms along with the darkening of your skin, it's best to see a healthcare provider or a podiatrist (foot doctor) for an evaluation. They can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include topical or oral medications, changes in footwear, or other interventions as needed. In the meantime, try to keep your feet dry and clean, wear comfortable shoes with good ventilation, and avoid sharing towels or footwear with others to prevent the spread of fungal infections.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
