What Causes Dark Vaginal Bleeding Postpartum?

Hello, I am three months post partum and had a regular period my first month after delivery, second month my period was a wk of bleeding a dark black sporting then a regular 7 day cycle and third month the same and now this month I ve now been bleeding black again, just spotting but enough that I m wearing a tampon because I m uncomfortable. Any reason I should be concerned? Never an abnormal pap or issue with pregnancy. I go to see my Gymecologist in a week but I m wondering if I should be seen sooner?

Hi,

Well, the cause of dark vaginal discharge is common and usually a harmless issue. Occasional spotting; postpartum might have this appearance and can be normal, especially if you were taking low-dose birth control pills. So, in most cases this is not a sign of disease. If it is then, usually this indicates bacterial vaginosis, STD or polycistic ovarian syndrome.

In some cases, however, a yellow or brown vaginal discharge could indicate a serious problem. Although brown and yellow vaginal discharge often does not indicate a serious problem, it should not be ignored if it persists, recurs or is accompanied by other symptoms. You should see a gynecologist for further work up. In some cases, a yellow or brown vaginal discharge could indicate a serious problem.
