What Causes Dark Spotting After Taking Morning-after Pill?

Hi, I took the morning-after pill around three weeks ago (My period ended 1 week before unprotected sex). One week after the pill, I had my period again, for 2 days only. I have never had irregular periods before. Since then, I have been getting traces of dark blood (like the spotting after period) everyday for the past 2 weeks. I am quite worried but I am scared to go to my GP, for personal reasons. Can you please advise? Thank you so much!

Hi and thanks for asking us on HCM.

The morning after pill does have some immediate side effects such as nausea, headache, lower abdominal pain or cramping and breast tenderness as well as side effects that alter the menstrual cycle such as abnormal bleeding, spotting and even prolonged bleeding. It may also cause the cycle to come early or late.

Do not worry too much - you are possibly experiencing side effects of the pill. Your next cycle should come around as normal.

Hope this helps
