Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
For the last few weeks I have experienced dark brown discharge from the vagina that has been abnormal. A few days ago I bled for about 3-4 days even though i was not due for my period and I had recently skipped it as I am on the contraceptive pill. After this I have further had darker discharge and quite a lot of it and I don t know what is causing this. Recently I had food poisoning and think I may have vomited before one of the pills had a chance to go through my system. Could this be what has caused this?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Few oral contraceptives do have a side effect of having no/irregular/early periods (especially if it is progesterone only pill).
But it can also be a break in swallowing a pill due to vomiting. In that case, you have to continue with the pill as advised & use additional precautions by using a barrier contraceptive (condom) in the remaining cycle of pills.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
