What Causes Crackling Sound In One Of My Ears?

A few months ago, I kept getting a crackling sound in one of my ears. I used ear drops and visited my doctors twice, both times being told I had no wax in my ears. My ears then started to make a whooshing sound (almost like the wind blowing) whenever I yawned and sometimes when I move my head it almost feels as though I can hear inside it! The crackling has since stopped ( I had an ear candle treatment which revealed I had a lot of very old wax in both ears) but the whooshing sound continues every time I yawn and every now and then I get a click in my ear. I was told at the doctors to try inhaling steam and taking decongestants as I probably had fluid in the small tubes in my ears, neither of these have worked. I am also trying antihistamines and a nasal spray (I have hay fever too.) Any other ideas or advice would be appreciated!

Hi dear ,

The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as ETD ( Eustachian tube dysfunction ) . The eustachian tubes are small passageways that connect the upper part of your throat (pharynx) to your middle ears and balance the pressure between the both . The most common cause of eustachian tube dysfunction is excessive mucus and inflammation of the tube caused by a cold, the flu, a sinus infection or allergies. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination and rule out condition like otitis media .Doctor will examine your ear canals and eardrums, and your nasal passages and the back of your throat. Doctor may recommend certain exercises like Close your mouth, hold your nose, and gently blow as if you are blowing your nose. Doctor may also prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin) for at leat a week and decongestants along with some mucolytic agent .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
