What Causes Cough And Chest Congestion?

yes please, I have been having what I call a rolling cough that has settled in my chest...I cough at night when I am on my back or right side...but feel like something is sitting on my chest when I sleep on my left side. I never get congested in my chest, but I work with children and a lot of them have really bad allergies, and two of them have had breathing issues, I did not feel like this till after I gave one on my children a breathing treatment, at the time I was having problems with my allergies... so I figured I was just getting a cold...my ears always hurt because I have vertigo and fluid builds on them really bad, but now I have this cough that seems like it clears and when I take a deep breath it I can feel something that is on my chest...almost like weight....when I have to move around to work I get these coughing attacks and it gets to the point that I feel like I m choking for a minute because it gets stuck in my throat....but then goes back down to my chest....ive never had this happen before.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

You haven't mentioned anything about your medical history but I suppose you must be suffering from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) because your doctor prescribed prednisone with the antibiotic.

Worse blood-streaked phlegm means that the initial treatment did not work particularly if you have shortness of breath as well.

If you do have COPD then perhaps more advanced antibiotics might have to be employed.

I usually prescribe a quinolone to patients with COPD and a respiratory tract infection with 'dirty' phlegm. Moxifloxacin is the best choice for most patients but levofloxacin should work as well.

For patients with bronchiectasis ciprofloxacin is usually recommended. Your best next step would be visiting your doctor for reassessment. Having experienced worsening after completing the treatment is a little worrisome and you shouldn't just ignore it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
