What Causes Constipation Post An Appendix Removal Surgery?

Hi, I am a 67-year-old male. I had appendicitis and removal of my appendix at age 18 months. Throughout my childhood, I remember bouts of constipation where my mother had to administer enemas at least a few times each year. As an adult, I continued to have some constipation issues and more recently have started using a stool softener. I have always wondered if there is any connection between removal of your appendix and a tendency to be constipated. Is there any correlation for this in the medical literature?
