What Causes Constipation And Anal Pain After Removal Of Appendix?

My husband had an appendectomy about three weeks ago by laparoscope. Everything went well. An abnormal growth on his appendix was removed as well. It was found to be benign. Now all of a sudden he is suffering from constipation and a lot of pain in his anus. He has taken lots of laxatives today but they haven t worked yet? Could he have developed adhesions in his anus since having surgery?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello

It's normal to get constipation after appendictectomy due to anesthesia and meds used during the procedure.

Yes, the adherences can occur but not at this extent.

It will take a few more days until the bowel function will get normal again.

Should take fiber supplement prior to meals, continue gentle laxatives, increase water intake, take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora.

Continue applying prep H after having a bowel movement. Go to bathroom each time you feel the need to, do not delay.

All the best.
