Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my 3 month old has been having slot of mucus going on and I can t seem to slow it down, it started about 4-5 weeks ago when we gave him his first shots. We have also been switching from enfamil to breast milk constantly because my wife has to work nights. Can you give me an idea as to why it won t go away? We have tried vapor, sucking it out and saleen spray. The spray has worked but hasn t cured the problem.
Here, your 3 month child's coughing with lots of mucus could be due to acute bronchitis, allergic bronchitis or upper respiratory infection etc which was started before 4 to 5 weeks.
Because of infection or inflammation inside throat, the mucus secretion has still there which needs some medical attention.
The child may need to undergo routine blood investigations with sputum (if it is keep coming with cough) smear tests and X- ray chest to rule out any other pathology of lung.
He will require full course of antibiotics (quinolones or cephalosporins) in syrup forms with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic syrup (antihistamines) with supportive treatment.
Also, continue with breast feeding instead of any formula milk or powder and continue with saleen spray.
Avoid taking cold water or fruit juices which might exaggerate your coughing with mucus.
