What Causes Constant Pain In The Lower Back On The Right Side?

My husband is complaining of constant pain in his right side from the lower back (all of lower back) to right under his armpit. He says his ribs seem larger, too. As if they re either swollen or pushed out. He s had Hep-C now (approx. 8 yrs) and is told he is healthy (organs, etc.). In early July he was told he has H. Pylori and did a course of antibiotics. After completing the antibiotics and then approximately one month later he was tested again and given another course of antibiotics (he started this course 2 days ago). Incidentally, he is incarcerated. He s been asking for help for the pain in his side for a couple of years but is told that nothing can be prescribed until lab tests are seen by a doctor. There is no doctor assigned to his unit. The last prescription came via tele-med by a doctor that was asked by the nursing director to handle my husband s case. So the question is...what could be causing the pain and how can it be treated? The cause and the pain. Thanks, Nancy

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As a first line management you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief.
If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated.
An ultrasound abdomen might be useful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
