What Causes Constant Headaches?

I've been having headaches that don't seem to go away with Tylenol and Motrin. Plus my back (spine) is achy. My ears and throat ache sometimes too...not bad but enough to be concerning with the headaches. A few weeks back I went to ER with fever and rash which also seemed to start with the same type of headaches. They said I had strep even though test was negative and gave me steroid shot and antibiotics. I appeared to get better after a week and didn't have headaches or anything for a couple of weeks. But now a constant headache and always feel tired too.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Constant headaches not responding to analgesic drugs should be evaluated properly. You had fever with rashes but was given antibiotics and later tests came negative so no need to worry for any infection. Still I'd advise you to get your Blood workup done along with ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate). This would help to rule out any chances of temporal arteritis. Other possibility causes for such presentation is Migraine, Cluster headache or Tension headache. Visit a neuropsychiatrist for help. As the headache is constant and you feel tired through out the time so possibility of tension type headache is more.

Medicines like Amitriptyline or Nortriptyline are commonly prescribed for chronic headache. These medicines when taken on regular basis help to reduce the intensity of headache. Apart from this for symptomatic relief ergot drugs like Sumatriptan can help. This will help to control severe headache attacks. Drugs like Propranolol help to prevent the episodes of headache. Visit a psychiatrist for evaluation and prescription of these medicines.

Hope this helps you. Take care. Thanks.
