What Causes Clicking Of Left Knee And Pain Despite Having Arthritis?

I have arthritis in many parts of my body, but the one that is hurting the most is my left knee, I had a cortisone shot in it by my Ortho doc last week. The problem is it keeps popping out like a socket and is very paiful but pops back in. I ve had X-rays which shows arthritis under the knee cap. What is the popping? , I know it s not coming out of a socket but what is it doing? Thankyou

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Clicking of the left knee and pain despite arthritis is commonly due to patellofemoral syndrome. It can be treated supporting braces, tapping, rehabilitation exercises, icing, etc. If non-surgical treatments are not effective, surgery may be recommended by the treating doctor. It can also be due to osteoarthritis or cartilage degeneration. Ligament or tendon snapping, either due to injury.

Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms are abnormal synovium, or the lining of the knee can be inflamed, meniscal tear could be a cause. Get clinically examined by an orthopedist. Get required imaging tests done so that treatment can be started at the earliest. To get rid of pain, you can take Naproxen or Combiflam, one SOS when needed after food.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
