What Causes Circular Brown Discolouration At The Back?

My six yearold has a mark on her back along her spine. It is a brown circle with the center skin slightly shiney an lightetpr than the normal skin tone. It is only about 6mm wide. Both myself and husband have noticed it in the last week. She has had no damage or accidents to cause this mark.

Hi,

It is difficult to determine the exact cause of the circular brown discoloration on your daughter's back without a physical examination. However, some possible causes of such a mark include:
* Birthmark: The circular brown discoloration may be a birthmark that has become more noticeable as your daughter grows older.
* Fungal Infection: Certain fungal infections can cause circular brown patches on the skin. These infections are more common in warm, moist environments.
* Tinea Versicolor: This is a common fungal infection that can cause patches of discolored skin, often on the back, chest, or arms.
* Vitiligo: Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes the loss of pigmentation in patches on the skin.
* Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This is a darkening of the skin that can occur after an injury or inflammation.

It is recommended that you take your daughter to see a dermatologist or pediatrician for a physical examination to determine the cause of the discoloration and to recommend appropriate treatment if necessary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
